About Sight First Project:

SightFirst is Lions' most ambitious and most successful initiative ever. Thanks to SightFirst, Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions.

SightFirst was launched by Lions in 1989 to battle preventable blindness. Sadly, 80 percent of the world's blind were needlessly without sight. Through SightFirst, Lions have prevented blindness by supporting cataract surgeries, helping expand eye hospitals and clinics, educating the public, distributing sight-saving medication, training eye care professionals and establishing sustainable eye care systems in underserved areas.

SightFirst has not only been stunningly effective but also startlingly efficient. On average, about every US$6 in donations has resulted in a person with vision restored or saved from blindness. In the 1990s, Campaign SightFirst raised US$143 million. With the successful conclusion the three-year Campaign SightFirst II in July 2008, Lions will expand current SightFirst programs and launch new initiatives through the more than US$200 million raised.

Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This Contest encourages young people worldwide to artistically express their visions of peace.

The theme of the 2009-10 Peace Poster Contest is "The Power of Peace." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate.

Promoting the Arts

Each year's contest consists of an original theme incorporating peace. Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture.

Brief description on Association for Children with Special Needs:

According to Malaysian National Health and Morbidity Survey 1996, it is estimated that 4.8% of children from birth to 14 years In Malaysia have one form of disabilities or other.

Sibu Division has an estimated population of 308,100 (1998) and the population of children aged from birth to 14 years Is around 103,300. Therefore, the number of children with varying forms of disabilities in Sibu Division is estimated to be in the region of about 5,000.

However, only 50 of these children with disabilities were registered with the Health or Social Welfare Department in 1996. This represents a serious under-registration which was perhaps due to the unavailability of rehabilitation services in Sibu at that time.

With the set up of two Early Intervention Centre (EIP) centers in 1998, namely Clinic for Children With Special Needs (under the Ministry of Health) and the Methodist Care Centre, there is a resultant increase in the number of registered children with disabilities with the Health and Social Welfare Departments - now estimated to be over 500.

In October 1999, a group of concerned individuals, together with parents of children with special needs held their first meeting to discuss the setting up of The Association for Children with Special Needs Sibu. A protem committee was thus formed and the Constitution adopted. The four existing Lions clubs in Sibu were offered the "Founder membership" status in appreciation for their past and continuing contributions towards the welfare of children with special needs.

In ……, The Association was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Brief description on Sibu Blind Centre:

Sarawak Society For the Blind, Sibu Division Branch

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Description of Charity:

The Society was registered in 1963. Objectives: To work for the introduction and progressive improvement of policies and inplementation of the programmes governing the education, rehabitation, vocational training, employment and social integration and welfare of the blind and other prgrammes and schemes for the prevention of blindness. 2 sheltered workshops, one built in 1969 and another one in 1983. Other buildings were added from time to time to meet the growing demand. Presently 28 blinds are recruited to do handicraft weaving, which is main source of income, together with 5 staff manning the Centre. Free board and lodging for all blinds. The activities include: eye screenings, cataract operations, food subsidy scheme, Vocational Training, Adult Education Class, massage service, comminuty based rehabilitation(CBR) service, etc.
